When Should You Book Your Wedding DJ? Booking Windows by Season and Market
Book your wedding DJ 9 to 14 months out for a peak-season Saturday in Los Angeles, and 8 to 12 months out for a spring or fall Saturday in North Carolina. Figuring out when to book wedding DJ coverage comes down to three things: your market, your month, and your day of the week. I'm Keith Welborn, DJ Keybo, and I've spent 15 years DJing weddings in LA and North Carolina. The booking windows below are the ones I see repeat every year in both markets.
Is there a simple rule for when to book wedding DJ services?
Book your DJ within two to four weeks of signing your venue contract. A signed venue makes your date official, and the DJ is one of the vendors most likely to sell out after it. A solo DJ can work only one wedding per Saturday, and 2026 contains just 52 Saturdays. A DJ who also handles MC duties well tends to run out of April, May, September, and October Saturdays long before running out of Fridays and Sundays.
Why do peak Saturdays in Los Angeles book 9 to 14 months out?
Peak LA Saturdays book 9 to 14 months out because weddings, corporate galas, and private parties all compete for the same small set of dates. Los Angeles wedding demand is heaviest from April through June and from September through October, when mild weather makes outdoor venues in Malibu and Pasadena easiest to use. A couple marrying on Saturday, October 10, 2026, should reach out to DJs between August 2025 and January 2026.
Holiday-weekend and pattern-date Saturdays in Los Angeles sell out faster than ordinary peak Saturdays. In 2026, Saturday, May 23 (Memorial Day weekend) and Saturday, September 5 (Labor Day weekend) give guests a built-in Monday travel day. Saturday, June 6, 2026 (6/6/26) draws pattern-date demand, and Friday, June 26, 2026 (6/26/26) often books like a Saturday. For any of those dates, treat 14 months out as your starting point.
Hotel ballrooms and estate venues in Beverly Hills often book a year or more ahead, and couples who land them usually book vendors right away. My Beverly Hills wedding venues guide covers what each space means for DJ setup, and Hiring a Wedding DJ in Los Angeles: The 2026 Guide You Actually Need walks through the full LA search.
How far ahead should you book a wedding DJ in North Carolina?
In North Carolina, book 8 to 12 months ahead for spring and fall Saturdays and 5 to 8 months ahead for summer and winter Saturdays. Mountain weddings around Asheville and Boone cluster in mid-to-late October, when fall color peaks along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and those Saturdays are the first to go.
Coastal North Carolina weddings in Wilmington and the Outer Banks peak from May through September, because beach ceremonies depend on warm water and long evenings. Raleigh, Durham, and Charlotte weddings follow the April-May and September-October pattern instead. Early-December Saturdays in all three metros book closer to the spring window than most couples expect, because venues are already decorated for the holidays.
What are the wedding DJ booking windows by season and market?
The table below shows when to reach out to a DJ in Los Angeles and North Carolina, based on the patterns I've seen in both markets over 15 years.
| Wedding date | Los Angeles | North Carolina |
|---|---|---|
| Peak Saturday (Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct) | 9–14 months out | 8–12 months out |
| Holiday weekend or pattern date | 12–14+ months out | 10–12 months out |
| Off-peak Saturday (Jul–Aug, Nov–Mar) | 6–9 months out | 5–8 months out |
| Friday or Sunday, any season | 4–8 months out | 4–6 months out |
| Weekday wedding | 3–6 months out | 3–5 months out |
Aim for the earlier end of each booking window if you want one specific DJ. The later end works if you're flexible and mainly need a qualified DJ who is free on your date.
What should you lock first: the date, the venue, or the DJ?
Lock the venue first, because the venue contract is what makes your wedding date official. Book the DJ and photographer second, ideally in the same month as the venue. Photographers and solo DJs share the same limit: one person, one Saturday. Florists, caterers, and bakers often run larger teams that cover several events in one day, so they rarely sell out as early.
Your DJ deserves an early slot because the DJ usually doubles as your MC and runs the whole reception. Grand entrance, toasts, cake cutting, and last dance all flow through one microphone. If you're still choosing between a DJ and live musicians, read Wedding DJ vs Live Band: The Full Breakdown before signing, because in-demand bands often book further out than DJs.
What can wait until after you book your wedding DJ?
Almost all of the music planning can wait until after you book your DJ. You don't need a playlist, a first dance song, or a reception timeline to sign. With my couples, the timeline is built together 60 days before the event, when venue load-in times, vendor schedules, and the order of toasts are finally confirmed. The Wedding Reception Order of Events timeline shows what a final run-of-show covers.
Song selection for your wedding can start any time you like. Some couples keep a running list in their phones for a year, while others pick everything from a first dance like Etta James' "At Last" to a last dance like Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" in two focused weekends. How to Create the Perfect Wedding Playlist (A DJ's Complete Guide) breaks the process into steps, including must-play and do-not-play lists.
Does booking a wedding DJ early cost more?
Booking a wedding DJ early doesn't usually cost more. Price is driven mainly by demand for the specific date, the hours you need, and what's included, such as ceremony sound, separate cocktail-hour audio, or lighting. Booking early protects your choice of DJ rather than changing the quote. For a market-wide look at what drives pricing, read How Much Does a Wedding DJ Cost in 2026? A Transparent Breakdown, and for a real quote on your date, reach out directly with your venue and timing.
Is it too late to book a wedding DJ 3 months out?
Three months out isn't too late for a weekday, Sunday, or off-season wedding. It's tight for an October Saturday in Los Angeles or a fall Saturday near Asheville. Contact three to five DJs at the same time, reply quickly, and stay flexible on extras like second-location ceremony sound or uplighting. How to Find a Wedding DJ That Won't Embarrass You lists the questions that screen out a poor fit in one phone call.
What should you have ready before you contact a wedding DJ?
Have four details ready before you contact a DJ: your date, your venue name, your approximate guest count, and your rough start and end times. With those four, a DJ can confirm availability and talk logistics in a single conversation. Some Los Angeles venues also enforce decibel caps or hard music cutoffs at 10 or 11 p.m., so ask your coordinator early.
